Reminiscent of my childhood hot summer days with sticky orange creamsicles on bicycles and of my adolescent trips to the mall with a big styrofoam cup of Orange Julius, this wholesome version of the orange-and-cream pair will trigger your taste buds to walk down memory lane too.
Terra Bella Living Cuisine in Redondo Beach called it ‘Orange Dreamsicle’ – their hemp milk – dried dates creation. On their last day open, we all went to pay tribute and though their supply of ingredients were dwindling, they had just enough orange extract to make me a shake. Not only did they make one for me, they kindly shared the simple ingredients in the shake!
They used store bought hemp milk but I substituted it with my cashew milk. The Flavorganics orange extract really makes this shake as I first bought a different brand at Whole Foods and it wasn’t the same. A few dates, some vanilla and a handful of ice was all that took to make this delicious shake.
I added a whole orange to this today because I wanted to see what that did to it — I think I could have done without the extract, or maybe a bit less with the orange but it was still a creamy, citrus-y delight. I highly suggest to use an orange instead of juice so you get all the bioflavinoids in addition to the vitamin C and added sweetness. So here goes:
- 16 oz organic hemp milk or unsweetened cashew milk
- 1 medium orange, peeled (optional)
- 2 large Medjool dates
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp orange extract
- handful ice
- Combine all in a blender and process until sooth and frothy
