DNA Test based Nutrition

Decades of research into our genetic makeup has given us great insight into the true causes of chronic disease. After attending a seminar on creating nutrition programs based on each individual’s unique genetic makeup, I am so excited to fill you in with all the mind blowing info that you have access to about your genetic makeup with a simple saliva test.

The Human Genome Project has estimated that humans have between 20,000 and 25,000 genes. Of these genes only about 1.5% (~300) protein-coding or enzymatic genes have been identified with metabolic functions. And depending on your genetic makeup, some of these may have SNiPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) or subtle DNA sequence variations that can reduce the function of that particular protein/ enzyme to up to 70%. Not all of these are problematic – they may just give us genetic varatiation; however some impair critical functions that can lead to many different health conditions.

So for example, if you have a genetic SNiP on the very well-known MTHF marker, you cannot convert folic acid to its active form, 5-methyltetrahydrafolate, and you will have trouble detoxing; if you have one on the PON gene, you cannot properly rid of pesticides so you NEED to eat organic. If you have a mutation on the VDR gene (vitamin D receptor), it will affect your immune function thus your ability to get over colds or even your susceptibility to chronic infections like lyme, parasties, viruses and set you up for autoimmune conditions. If you have one on the SULT gene, you cannot process sulfur containing foods like wine and eggs, which also may lead to autoimmunity, asthma and leaky gut. You may have some of these markers checked already and have intervened with nutritional support; however it is imperative that you discover as many of these metabolic SNiPs as you can because they influence each other’s role in the metabolic cascade.

EPIGENETICS

I spoke to many of you about epigenetics in our sessions together. Epigenetic changes are the genetic changes that occur due to environmental factors. The genes that may not be mutated at birth but get damaged due to poor diet, deficiencies and toxicities. We have some control in ridding our susceptibility to these epigenetic induced mutations. (If you haven’t watched this video before, please take a look.) We cannot change the genes we were BORN with but can stop expressing them with the PROPER combination of nutrients and prevent further damage. Side note: The good news is that if you create a condition in your body where your metabolic processes are working, even when you have some of these genes, you have a good chance that your children can be born with correctly coded genes.
