Over time, toxic wastes can accumulate in the colon and liver, and then circulate throughout the body via the bloodstream. This can lead to allergies, headaches, dull skin, acne, stunted nail and hair growth and myriad other health problems.
Enemas are use to help release waste from the colon walls to clear toxins from the body. It’s a great addition to any cleanse or detoxification protocol.
Caffeine and the enzymes present in coffee, called palmitates, help the liver to stimulate bile production, open duct dilation and increase in bile flow. Toxins filtered in the liver are carried in the bile to the intestines for removal. The enzymes also have anti-oxidant properties, helping to lessen cell damage by quenching free radicals. Theophylline and theobromine (two other chemicals in coffee) dilate blood vessels and counter inflammation of the gut. The presence of liquid in the bowels stimulates peristalsis (muscle contractions in the intestines – the feeling that “you have to go”) and thus the release of toxic bile from the intestines and out there rectum.
Can I Just Drink Coffee?
Most acknowledge the negative effects of drinking coffee including dehydration. It is counter productive to liver detoxification and thus, drinking a cup of coffee has an entirely different effect from that of using it as a cleansing enema. Drinking can increases reflex response; lower blood pressure; increase heart rate; cause insomnia and heart palpitation; over stimulate the adrenals; irritate the stomach; and leaves a toxic, acidic residue in the body. Many do use coffee to stimulate a bowel movement but in that process, the load on the liver is increased, while an enema cleanse the liver as well as the bowels.
Can I Use Any Coffee?
I would highly advise that you buy organic whole coffee beans as freshly grind them each time you take an enema.
Ingredients and Items Needed
- 1/2 quart (about 16 oz) Purified water (not tap water) for heating
- 1/2 quart (about 16 oz) Purified water for cooling the heated water
- 2 Tablespoons Organic Coffee (whole coffee beans). We recommend Organic Espresso Sierra Blend or Allegro Organic Light and Dark Blend which can be found at Whole Foods.
- Pink Salt
- Enema bucket
- French Press Coffee Pot (makes it sooo much easier) or a pot to boil water and fine mesh strainer DO NOT USE A DRIP MACHINE.
- Lubricant (for insertion of tube into rectum): Organic Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, etc (NO jellies like KY or Vaseline)
- Old towels (to use when laying on the floor); coffee drops will permanently stain the towels)
- Heat Water. Heat 1/2 quart of the water almost to boiling (steam will begin to arise from the water). Then take off the heat.
- Grind Coffee Beans. Fresh-grind the coffee beans to a fine powder. Do not do this ahead of time so you will get the freshest, most active phytonutrients from the coffee. (If you plan to do this ahead of time, plan to use a dark, vacuum-sealed container, which should be kept cool.) Pre-ground coffee beans are partially oxidized&should not be used.)
- Add Ingredients to Hot Water. If using a French Press, pour hot water to French Press. Add the freshly ground coffee bean powder and 1 Tbsp Pink Salt into the hot water.
- Let Sit. Cover and let sit for 15 minutes. (The longer soak time helps for a more complete release of the phytonutrients into the water, including the tightly sequestered alkaloids of the coffee.)
- Strain Mixture (if not using a French Press). Strain the coffee-herbal mixture with a fine metal strainer to remove any large particles that could clog the enema tube into the enema bucket.
- Add Cool Water to Mixture. Add about 1/2 quart of room-temperature water (cool or room temperature) to the hot coffee-mixture (about 1/2 quart). The idea is to cool the hot coffee mixture to a warm temperature (so it is not too hot when inserting the fluid into the rectum). The final mixture should be warm to the touch – about 100F. Note: If the temperature is too hot, it can cause damage to the anus or intestines; if it is too cool, it may cramp the intestines and toxic waste limination may be poor.
However, cool is better than hot.
- Take Enema. Try to take about half of the liquid (about 1/2 quart) into the bowels; then hold for 10-15 minutes before expelling. Then take in the second 1/2 quart and hold for another 10-15 minutes. Then expel. You’re done!
- Take Probiotics to replace beneficial bacteria in your bowels.
- Often, if some fecal matter is lower in the rectal tract, you may find it difficult to take in more than 1/8 or 1/4 of the liquid. Just take enough to expel the fecal matter in the lower tract and expel. Then divide the remaining in half and hold each for 15 minutes.
- After taking in the liquid and you feel a strong urge to expel the liquid, even after a minute or two, do not resist, go ahead and expel it. At first, it may be hard to hold the liquid for the full 15 inutes. Later, after several enemas, it will be much easier for the bowels to hold the liquid for the full 15 minutes.
- Best enema time: during the day before 8 pm. Give yourself some time to rest after the enema (20 to 30 minutes) without walking or exercising. This helps ensure that you are at home (near a toilet) if another small amount of enema liquid needs to come out that was not expelled earlier.
- The first time an enema is taken, it is highly recommended to take one for 3 consecutive days. Then it can be used 1-3 times a week for 1-4 months. Individual rograms should be directed by your healthcare professional.
