Beat the “Afternoon Slump”
Do you ever get that 3:30 feeling? You’re tired, slow, can’t really focus on anything. The reason for this kind of fatigue could be due to a number of factors but poor diet is usually the number one culprit! If you’re using coffee or 5-hour energy shots, here are some healthy and more nutritious alternatives.
1. Fruit: …especially apricots, bananas, cantaloupe, and kiwi which are high in potassium- an electrolyte that maintains normal nerve and muscle function. Fruits will also provide you with ready-to-use sugars, fiber, and tons of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Fruits will absolutely give you that energy boost you are looking for. If you have plans after work or are going to the gym and need a second wind, consume some fruit about an hour before and it will help bring you back to life. You can also make a smoothie and blend a few fruits together and add in protein and greens to give you a real boost!
2. Flax Seeds: Not only are flax seeds a rich source of energy, they also provide you with many vitamins, minerals, nutrients, and antioxidants vital to your health.
3. Nuts: Nuts are a source of protein which means it’s going to burn a little slower. You won’t get the energy right away, but it will last you longer. Some of the best nuts for energy are almonds, walnuts, pecans, and cashews.
4. Eggs: Eggs are another excellent protein source and it’s not something you should just eat for breakfast. Hard boiled eggs are easy to bring with you to work and will give you a boost of energy and help you concentrate.
Remember: Fats and carbohydrates may supply the body with energy, but protein helps regulate the release of that power so make sure you are getting a balance through out the day.
