Hate the Gym?

This article, written by Mireille Guiliano (famed for her book French Women Don’t Get Fat) explores a few easy ways to move more without hitting the gym.

It suggests ridding of the “No Pain, No Gain” attitude to exercising and instead, making movement an integral part of our days.   It is an ongoing suggestion I give my clients to find an activity that they enjoy!

Here are the steps below or read the full article here:

  1. Don’t save your steps, multiply them!
  2. Incorporate simple resistance movements into your daily routine.
  3. Take care of your core.
  4. Acquaint yourself with small to moderate free weights (3-5 lbs).
  5. Get en vélo. (Get on a Bike!)
  6. Yoga.
  7. Vive l’escalier! (Take the Stairs!)

  • Have you ever wondered about the odd hill that stands alone while driving along the 405?  That would be Baldwin Hills, a little out of place, giving us breathtaking views of all of Los Angeles.

The trail, steps and driveway leading up to the scenic overlook is off Jefferson Blvd, a little east of the park entrance on Duquesne Ave in Culver City. Parking on Jefferson might be a little tricky but the hike up and view is spectacular!

These steps aren't uniform like the Santa Monica Stairs. The irregular steps range from a couple of inches to almost 2 feet - and some are deeper than others making the 230ish-step hike, more like a 500 step hike for a short-legged person like me!  Weekends are packed with families, little children running up and climbing the bigger steps with the help of their little hands.
  • A recent article in Health gives insight to why walking up a set of stairs is much more challenging than jogging/running an equivalent distance.  Even if your main cardio workout consists of running on a treadmill or regular 5-k races, it shouldn't be surprising if walking up a flight of stairs leaves you huffin' and puffin' for air. The article explains that this difference is due to the missing vertical element when running on flat ground.

So what is the advantage of this vertical element? Though most other cardio exercises including swimming and biking get your heart rate up, you need an upward elevation as with stairs or hiking to get your lower muscles to work and lift your body weight.
  • One of my favorite raw snacks, Earthling Organics has a small but mighty-ly yummy line of granola and granola bars. The granola, 'Rawnola' are soft but crunchy nuggets of almonds, coconut, pumpkin seeds and figs, flavored with agave, cinnamon, ginger, vanilla and sea salt. Eat straight out of the bag - be careful not to finish it! - or enjoy as a cereal with fruit!

To the three bar flavors available since last year, Original Almond, Goji, and Yogi (Masala Chai), the company just launched a new concoction - 'Matcha', aka traditional Japanese Green Tea. Stock a few in your purse, gym bag and car to grab on the go!
