Harmful Ingredients in Cosmetics

<a target="blank" href="http://storyofstuff.org/cosmetics/">watch this</a>
It's so sad that almost all of the everyday personal care items stocking the shelves at Target and Walmart, even fancy department store brands are full of harmful synthetic chemicals. These bottle of creams, shampoos, etc, are brightly labeled with colorful images and promises for wrinkle reductions, whitening sun spots and repairing damaged hair -- all the while adding to the toxic burden on our bodies.

All of the below ingredients should be avoided.

These offenders can even be found in many of the natural and organic brands.
Be sure to read the labels!

  • Parabens (menthyl-, ethyl-, propyl, butyl, isobutyl-) - Disrupts normal hormone function, may cause allergic reactions and skin rashes. They are known to be toxic and can be absorbed by the body through the skin.
  • Diethanolamine (DEA), Triethanolamine (TEA) - Hormone disruptor, may cause allergic reactions.
  • Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate - Causes eye irritation, scalp scurf similar to dandruff, skin rashes and other allergic reactions.
  • Petroleum/Petroleum Jelly - It has no nutritional value for the skin and can interfere with the body's own natural moisturizing mechanism, leading to dryness and chapping. It often creates the very conditions it claims to alleviate.
  • Propylene Glycol (PEG) - Known to cause allergic reactions, hives and eczema, potential carcinogen.
  • Fragarence or Parfum - May contain hundreds of chemicals that are neurotoxins
  • Synthetic Colors (FD&C or D&C) - Used to make cosmetics "pretty”.  They can be carcinogenic and can cause headaches, dizziness, rash, hyper-pigmentation, violent coughing, vomiting, skin irritation.
  • Aluminum – Aluminum is a heavy metal, therefore a poison and neurotoxin.
  • Talcum Powder – Contains a chemical similar to asbestos.  Talc can increase the risk of ovarian cancer and may cause lung fibrosis.
  • Phthalates - Hundreds of animal studies have shown that phthalates can damage the liver, the kidneys, the lungs and the reproductive system, especially the developing testes.
  • 1,4-Dioxane – Known carcinogen

  • Covering the entire surface area of your body, the integumentary system, aka, your skin, is the largest organ of your body. Whether you are deficient in essential fatty acids, antioxidants or just have poor circulation, your skin may not be getting adequate nutrients.

Many of us use lotions to help deliver some of these nutrients and also to moisturize dry skin. Though lotions and creams may help, I've found olive oil to be the most effective. Not only is is great as a moisturizer but also as a cleanser&make-up remover. Because it is non-comedogenic, anti-inflammatory and hypo-allergic, it won't clog pores, will reduce swelling/redness and can be used by just about anyone! Also contrary to popular belief, it does not make your skin more oily and can safely be used on the face too.

  • Heavy metal toxicity is very common and is very serious. Even small amounts of these metals over time can cause many ill- effects. Look below at the most common metals and their sources to start reduce your exposure as much as possible.

    ALUMINUM

    Most common sources:
Aluminum cookware, utensils, foil, cans; Antiperspirants/ deodorants; Paints; Table salt&baking powder; Antacids; Bleached flour; Food additives; Dental Composite; Main water treatment (aluminum sulfate); Acid rain leaches aluminum out of the soil and into the ground water.

    Health implications:
Contact Dermatitis; Skeletal Demineralization; Slow Learning; Interference With Calcium And Phosphorus Metabolism.

    ARSENIC

    Most common sources:
Tobacco smoke; Laundry detergent; Bone meal; Sea food; Drugs; Rat poison; Beer; Water.
  • Vitamin C has many roles in the body including antioxidant activity and collagen synthesis. "Oxidation" or free radical damage (from pollution, stress, smoking, internal processes etc) has long been established as the process that causes "aging" and can cause DNA damage.  Vitamin C protects the skin from damaging effects of the sun and is also vital for collagen synthesis, without which the skin will wrinkle, form sunspots and sag as we age.

Though getting sufficient vitamin C in our diets is crucial, it is noted only a minuscule amount of ingested vitamin C gets to the skin. Studies have shown that topically applying vitamin C to the skin increases the density of the dermis, improves collagen synthesis and protects free radical damage.

Look for creams with sea buckthorn, rose hips or red tea for a natural vitamin C boost.
